Living history at your fingertips...

Arrival of RHA Okehampton 1892

About Us

There have been considerable changes during the past 120 years and much of the history only exists in the memories of the older generation and in faded photographs and documents stored in dusty attics.

Okehampton Community Archive was formed to identify and preserve the living history of the town, and to provide a permanent, comprehensive digital archive which will be accessible to the public. Our main focus is on the people and the events in and around Okehampton from the end of the Victorian period to the present day.

The archive was collected, compiled and catalogued by volunteers over a ten year period. It was envisaged as a record of people and events as well as historical record of Okehampton in living memory,
starting from 1900 to present day.
The group obtained a small building on Mill Road which it renovated and meticulously collated, catalogued and scanned the many photographs and documents donated by the local population.
Part of the remit was also to record current towns’ events such as the carnival, summer fairs and civic events etc., as well as interview notable residents of Okehampton.
You can watch videos of these events and listen to the interviews on this website.
We can also produce DVD’s of specific events and interviews for reasonable price.
All monies received help to maintain this website to ensure free access to all.

The archive centre was officially opened by the then Mayor of Okehampton, Mike Morse in 2011. Pictured here with Gill Lower, Colin Letchford, Horace Rutley, Michael Ireland and Andy Aiano

Access to the archive

Currently, access is only available by enquiry

This is because we are in a transitionary phase as a result of Covid. We have had to move from our dedicated building in Mill Road. The archive materials are currently stored in the Town Hall on a temporary basis until a more permanent home can be found.

We are in the process of digitising all the material - which is taking longer than expected. If there is anything specific that you are researching and are looking for information please use the contact box to get in touch.
